New native in Genoa

Brock Alan Falcke Tholen was born a sixth-generation Nevadan on Oct. 31, better known as Nevada Day.
The son of Genoans Trent Tholen and Katrina Falcke Tholen, he weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces, when he was born at 2:58 p.m.
“He’s doing great,” said Katrina. “He’s a very mellow baby.”
Brock is the grandson of Roger and Jane Falcke. His lineage goes back to the state’s birth. Falckes had a hand in building the Genoa courthouse.
His father, Trent, works for the Douglas County Assessor’s Office.

Whitney in Washington, D.C.

Douglas High School junior Whitney Louie is in Washington, D.C., for the National Young Leaders Conference.
Whitney arrived in the capital and has participated in her first leadership group meeting, according to an e-mail sent by one of the conference organizers on Tuesday.
The Congressional Youth Leadership Council is a nonpartisan, independent, educational organization. Since 1985, the council has inspired young people to achieve their full leadership potential. Members of the U.S. Congress have joined the commitment by serving on the CYLC Honorary Congressional Board of Advisors.
Whitney’s parents are Gary and Renea Louie of Minden.

Apples for the picking

Genoa resident Martha Williams said she brought a load of her apples to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet last week, and the folks there seemed to appreciate them. She said she could use some help with the rest.
Many places in the Valley have experienced a bumper crop of apples and anyone who wanted to pick them for the food closet is welcome to ask, she said.
There are plenty of apples in the trees still, despite some cooler weather on the way. But before you start strolling up to people’s trees, be sure to ask the owner.

Minden resident Jack Flannery said he had a news story for me when he came into the office on Wednesday.
He said there was something in his tree that he didn’t recognize and tried to find help to identify it.
After describing it, I was pretty sure it was a paper wasp nest. We went over to his house and sure enough, there in the backyard, was a nest as big as his head.
The 77-year-old said he didn’t notice it until this week. Jack’s lived in Minden since 1992. A U.S. Marine who served in Korea, he was a sheetmetal worker for 40 years who retired to Minden.
The stagecoach Flannery built made an appearance in the first Carson Valley Parade of Lights. Several pieces he’s built, including a model of the Minden Flour Mill, have been on display in a variety of places.
