Freedom isn't free, but the 26th annual Pops in the Park performance by the Reno Philharmonic is, thanks to the efforts of the Sierra Philharmonic League and a host of donors.
Pops in the Park takes place in Mormon Station State Historic Park and typically draws about 3,000 people to the town.
The event costs the Philharmonic League $36,000 every year, and they're not sure they have the amount until after the event.
“A man from Lake Tahoe called me and asked what the price was,” said League President Brenda Robertson. “I told him the concert is free, but it costs us $36,000 to put on. He asked me how we raise the money, and I said ‘we pass the basket, have the auction, businesses give us money and we've got some grant money.' We work very hard to do this every year.”
Robertson said she was happy that the salute to the military was back in this year's program. The salute includes the songs of each branch of the military. When each plays, members or veterans of that service stand up to be recognized.
“It means a lot to me that it's back in,” Robertson said. “I get goosebumps when I hear it.”
The Sierra Philharmonic is getting some help this year from the Town of Genoa, which provided a grant and the Carson Valley Arts Council.
“We're working toward some partners,” she said. “We've also got a couple of new people coming on board for next year from the Carson Valley Arts Council.”
Robertson said watching the people enjoy the event has been her motivation to volunteer with the league over the years.
“I do love it,” she said. “I think it's wonderful family entertainment, and it's patriotic. Seeing how much people are enjoying it makes it really worth the effort.”
Pops in the Park begins 1 p.m. Saturday at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa. Patriotic music by the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jason Altieri starts at 4:15 p.m. John Tyson narrates the “Lincoln Portrait.” Entertainment includes performances by the Carson Chamber Singers, Country Valley Jug Stompers, Doc-o and Squeeky, the Gairin Celtic Singers, Chorus of the Comstock and a children's instrument petting zoo.
A silent auction raises money to continue the event. For more information contact Robertson at 267-2403.
