Halloween approaches with a frightening swiftness, and here are some local ways to celebrate with ghoulish glee.
Calling all pumpkin Picassos from ages 6 to 12 — the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village needs your talents for its first annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Fifty gourds of varying sizes will be waiting for fancy slicing and dicing this Saturday, Oct. 24 from 4-6 p.m., according to the hotel’s Sarah Pickett.
All are invited to the free event to be held in the Sierra Deck Café. For children under the age of 9, assistance by an adult will be allowed. Anyone who finds carving a challenge can express his or her Halloween creativity by painting the pumpkin.
Hot chocolate and cider, along with cookies, will provide artistic sustenance.
“Everyone will be a winner with prizes for all,” Pickett said.
Judging begins at 7 p.m.
Spirited times will be happening in Homewood at the Tahoe Maritime Museum on Thursday, Oct. 29. With boats and displays dating back more than 100 years, it is possible to imagine someone from the past still lurks inside the facility’s memento-laden walls.
Their Family Night Out is always a popular event for both residents and visitors.
In addition to the usual kid’s activities scheduled for a half an hour starting at 5 p.m. and movie all participants — regardless of age — are encouraged to come in costume. Dressing as a landlubber might not be appropriate, though.
Friday and Saturday nights will be the time to hire a babysitter and let the adults howl at the moon in costume by attending one or both of the events at the Crown Room at Crystal Bay Casino.
It is “High Voltage” with estrogen on Oct. 30 when the five-piece, all-female tribute band AC/DShe takes the stage for the Devil’s Night Costume Party.
The San Francisco-based group promises to deliver the high-energy heavy metal influenced rock-and-roll, complete with English schoolboy outfits as worn by AC/DC co-founder Angus Young. Advance ticket prices are $18 and $23 at the door.
Now into their fifth year of annually headlining the Creeper’s Ball, Tainted Love, another Bay Area band, is expected to be a sellout. The show begins at 9 p.m., and tickets are $25. As an ’80s cover band, their extensive playlist is impressive. Anything from Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” to the “Old Time Rock and Roll” of Bob Seger with a bit Van Halen’s “Jump” could be heard.
Halloween Tahoe-style is a blast of explosive energy.
