The Marcus Ashley Gallery of South Lake will host a special charity event from 6-9 p.m. Saturday celebrating the Art of Theodor Seuss Geisel.
A portion of all proceeds from the event will go directly to the South Lake Tahoe Court Appointed Special Advocates Organization. CASA helps children caught in the overburdened legal system by no fault of their own. On this evening, the gallery will host representative Jeff Schuffman, from the Art of Dr. Seuss collection, Schuffman will be sharing stories about the good doctor’s life and work.
Most people are familiar with many of the forty children’s books Dr. Seuss published during his life, but few are aware that in addition to writing and illustrating kid’s books, Seuss was an artist in his own right, one who experimented with a wide variety of subjects, styles, and mediums. Marcus Ashley Galleries features this “Secret Art” of Dr. Seuss in addition to many archived pieces, commemorative bronze sculptures, and his wildly popular collection of unorthodox taxidermy.
Those interested in attending the event at Marcus Ashley Gallery are asked to RSVP to the gallery via telephone (530) 544-4278. In addition to the presentation by Mr. Schuffman, the gallery will feature music, drinks, and appetizers. CASA in South Lake Tahoe will directly benefit from all sales this evening. CASA is an organization that provides court appointed special advocates to abused and neglected children.
In his Secret Art, Seuss’ signature hilarity and whimsy shines through, and like his children’s books, the viewer must forever be on the lookout for a deeper meaning imbedded in the work. Think for a moment of the keenly perceptive and delicately delivered, social and political ideals written by Dr. Seuss during his 70-year career. “The Lorax” was written as an argument for corporate responsibility and resource conservation. “Yertle the Turtle” was an argument against Fascism. “The Sneetches” was as an argument against discrimination. “Horton Hears a Who” as a parable on democracy. “The Butter Battle Book” was a visionary tale on nuclear proliferation and even “The Cat in the Hat” was written as a statement against illiteracy and conformity.
