Ghouls, goblins and gourds on the North Shore

Halloween fun can be found in many forms along North Shore this coming week for ghouls of every persuasion and interest.

Thanks to the fun-loving merchants of Tahoe City, a new phase has been added to their annual Harvestfest.

If the names Frank N. Furter, Riff Raff and Eddie combined with the lyrics “its just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right” strike a familiar chord, then grab some eyeliner, corsets and garter belts and head for Boatwork’s Marina Green this Friday night for the free 7 p.m. showing of the cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“It is something for the older, local crowd,” said Justin Broglio, the executive director of the Tahoe City Downtown Association.

The 1975 film, featuring a Transylvanian transvestite as one of its main characters, is rated R.
Following the film, everyone is invited to the costume party and dance at the Lakeside Tahoe City in the adjacent Lighthouse Mall on North Lake Boulevard off Highway 28. Admission is free and prizes for the costume contest will be awarded.

The next morning, leave the costume on, but trade out the spiky high heels for running shoes and be ready for the second annual Monster Dash in Incline Village.

Benefiting the cross-country running teams of Incline Village High School, the 5-kilometer run begins at 11 a.m. Costumed contestants are urged to partake by registering at the event an hour earlier, which starts from the Upper Village Center at the corner of Southwood and Mays.

Registration for the walk/run is $20 for adults and $15 for students. A T-shirt and raffle ticket is included with the price.

Afterwards, many will opt to stay for a bit of bratwurst and beer offered during the Village’s third annual Oktoberfest activities.

What is Halloween without the perfect pumpkin? Ruined.

Grab the gourd that gathers the most praise back in Tahoe City at the Rideout Community Center, 740 Timberland Lane, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The yearly event provides fun for the entire family with hay and pony rides, and for extra sweetness, a dessert walk.

With a history stretching back to the original Paiute Native Americans, it is not surprising to find Truckee chock-full of spirited residents — both past and present.

Soothing the spirits begins with a glass of wine during the first Historical Haunted Tour on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Glasses will be raised and toasts for courage begin at the historic Kruger-White house located at 10292 Donner Pass Road. Now home to the Trio Wine Bar, the house holds its own phantoms in addition to the ones that will be visited during the tour. A series of ghostly haunts will be featured on the 90-minute itinerary, including the old jail.

The $25 fundraising event for the Trails and Vistas and Truckee Donner Historical Society is open to adults only. Participants’ children are invited to Professor Higginbody’s Halloween Night Out at the Kidzone Museum. The cost is $10 per child and includes gooey pizza and oozy science activities for children 2 years and older from 5-9 p.m.

Partaking in any of these events, one should be forewarned.

The moans heard might not be the wind in the trees.
