Haggard's back at Harrah's Lake Tahoe

Merle Haggard has changed music twice, and don’t be surprised if he does it one more time.
The 72-year-old guitarist and songwriter remains prolific. He has recorded 11 CDs in the last decade in myriad musical genres.
The subject of an in-depth story in the current Rolling Stone, Haggard is described as a family man who eats the food he grows on his Northern California ranch and has a great concern for his country.
“I wish I could say something in eight lines that would turn the entire country’s head,” he told reporter Jason Fine. “If there’s an ambition left in my body, it’s to do that: to write eight lines that will put the condition of the country foremost again before it’s too late.”
While the Nashville Sound was being created in the 1960s, Haggard and Buck Owens invented the Fender Telecaster twang called the Bakersfield Sound.
A decade later, Haggard paved a path for outlaw country.
He’s had 40 No. 1 country hits, including “Okie from Muskogee,” “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” and “The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde.” In 1983 he and Willie Nelson recorded “Pancho and Lefty,” which also went No. 1.
Haggard performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe in the South Shore Room.
