Cast makes up for script in ‘Post Grad’

While not exactly a keeper, the cast alone is worth giving “Post Grad” a peek.
I hadn’t seen Carol Burnett or Michael Keaton in anything for so long I just assumed they retired from the business. However, I must say that anything with Jane Lynch in it is also worth a looksee.
“Post Grad” is an amalgamation of several movies, most notably National Lampoon’s “Vacation,” But rather than rooting for the Griswalds, it’s the Malbys.
When recent graduate Ryden Malby (Alexis Bledel) doesn’t get her dream job, she’s forced to move back in with her parents (played by Keaton and Lynch). College valedictorian Jessica (Catherine Reitman) plays a good snob and in part is the reason that Ryden doesn’t get the gig. Yes, she is the daughter of filmmaker Ivan Reitman who co-produced this movie.
Rounding out the rest of her family is a whacked-out grandmother (Burnett) and younger brother (Bobby Coleman). Her childhood friend Adam (Zach Gilford) is happy she’s back home, but does she have the same feelings for him that he has for her? He has his own life quest and it’s teetering between going to law school or following his passion as a singer-songwriter. Completing the cast is Ryden’s next-door dreamy neighbor played by Rodrigo Santoro and a nice cameo (of which there are a few) with comedian Kirk Fox as Buckle-O-Bill who has a few run-ins with Ryden’s dad. Fox is pretty funny and I hope there are some deleted scenes that will be included in the DVD version.
The movie can’t decide if it wants to be a dark sarcastic picture or a motivational one telling the viewer to follow dreams over anything that might seem pragmatic even during these recessionary times.
Is it a paint-by-number motion picture? Yeah, and it’s rather predictable knowing what scene will play out. But the quirkiness of its cast makes up for the script. I think because the cast included some veteran comic actors that director Vicky Jenson allowed some liberty. This is her second outing directing a movie that hasn’t been animated. She did some impressive work for DreamWorks.
“Post Grad” is rated PG-13 for sexual situations and brief strong language and clocks in at a very tight 88 minutes.
