Hot-rod buffs can choose between hot and cool.
While thousands come to Reno each summer for Hot August Nights, others visit a more intimate show, Hot Tahoe Cruizin', at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay.
“It's cooler, safer and in a more beautiful location,” said organizer Tom Argo. “There are just 150 cars so they get to feel real special. You can get lost at Hot August Nights, and they never lied about it being hot in Reno.
Hot Tahoe Cruizin' begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday, Aug. 9.
The event began at South Shore in 1999. Five years ago it moved north to the Tahoe Biltmore, which is donating $1,500 in cash prizes.
“A lot of people come up from Sacramento and Redding and San Jose,” Argo said. “A lot trying to get out of the heat. Crystal Bay is still close enough to check out the swap meet. Some come from Reno. They leave their homes to have vacation from the craziness.”
Early bird car owner and vendor registration is Wednesday in the Tahoe Biltmore's parking lot. The event continues Thursday with an all-day Show and Shine. Cars, trucks and motorcycles participate in a poker runs around the lake and to Reno where folks can check out the car swap. The action moves inside the Biltmore at 9 p.m. for free entertainment by Duane “Bean” Sousa on the casino floor.
