With Toccata back at Lake Tahoe, fireworks are just an additional bonus to the Fourth of July celebration.

The Orchestra and Community Choral Artists of the Tahoe Area open a 21-concert 2009 Big Blue Summer MusicFest with the “Red, White and Toccata — Tahoe Blue” concert series.

The program will feature the music of American composers, including art songs, spirituals, Broadway showtunes and a trio of trumpets. The concert culminates in the traditional “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and a sing-along of “America the Beautiful.”

The first South Tahoe Concert in the series will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, in the Valhalla Boathouse in South Lake Tahoe, with a repeat performance at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 5 at Squaw Valley Chapel.
The final concert of the series, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at First United Methodist Church (209 W. First St. in downtown Reno) is part of Toccata’s Tuesdays at Artown.

Maestro James Rawie will conduct all performances.

Donna Axton accompanies on piano and David Brock on organ with SummerFest chorus and soloists Anna Helwing and Joy Strotz, soprano; Susan Sonnemaker, mezzo soprano; Andy Sonnemaker, tenor; and Stuart Duke, baritone. The concerts open with a composition by Fahad Siudat, “The Ship Starting,” composed and dedicated to Toccata featuring trumpet trio Mark Lord, William van Meter and Joe Savage.

Other series in the Big Blue Summer MusicFest are “Tutti Flutti” (July 11-14) “Toccata Winds” (July 19–21) and a “Mountain of Mendelssohn” (July 26-28) a 200th birthday party featuring the Italian Symphony and excerpts from “Elijah” by the Toccata Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The festival concludes with performances of Faure’s Requiem (Sept. 10–13).

Tickets at the door are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (62 and older), $5 for students with valid ID, and $25 for preferred seating. Children younger than 12 enter free with a paying adult. Tickets are available in advance through www.ActivityTickets.com. The July 7 and 14 Artown shows are free.
