Comic Henton takes break by working Tahoe Improv

I spoke with comedian John Henton told me last week how much he missed Lake Tahoe. Being up here gives him a break from working on the road. Then again he is also getting paid the week he is here, so I too would be missing Lake Tahoe (and Chicago, Detroit and Humboldt if they booked comedy there on a weekly basis).

Henton performs at The Improv inside Harveys Resort and Casino through Sunday, July 5. Because of the fireworks show, The Improv will not have a show Saturday, July 4.

His insights have served him well, landing him appearances on “The Tonight Show” with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. If he can get on there again with Conan O’Brien, wow, that would make for a "threequel.’"

Henton has a long and extensive list of television credits which started with the “Bob Hope’s Young Comedian’s Special.” From there he appeared in his own half-hour comedy special for Showtime called “John Henton: Comedy With An Attitude” and Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend.” He really became a fixture when he starred on the successful FOX TV series, “Living Single” co-starring Queen Latifah. The show received stellar ratings and TV Guide selected Henton’s character as one of the “breakout” characters of the season. And if that wasn’t enough, Henton garnered further recognition when he signed up to play the character of “Milsap” on the sitcom, “The Hughleys.” When “The Hughleys” moved to UPN during its third season on Monday nights it was the anchoring program for the fledgling network and stayed there for another two years.

John’s body of work was recognized in 2001 and 2002 with an NAACP “Image Award” nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. John was really moved by that honor. His appeal goes beyond the characters he plays on television as he continues to captivate audiences with his observational and topical humor. He continues to be a talk show favorite with appearances on “The View,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and numerous other late night talk shows.

Hammers makes Tahoe debut

It’s always exciting when someone within the comedy community gets up here for the very first time to Tahoe. I especially enjoy it when the new act has already heard great things about Lake Tahoe (and not to mention the host here as well). Wendy Hammers’ text messages have been hysterical. I not only found myself looking forward to coming here but more importantly how she got my number to begin with?

Hammers is one of those exciting comedians who loves to cause trouble when she is off stage — and always in good fun. She also is an actress, an author, a producer and has her own company called Jersey Girl Productions. On television she was the one who confused Tony on HBO’s “The Sopranos” and gave Larry a bad time on “Curb your Enthusiasm.” She was instrumental in ticking off Bernie on “The Bernie Mac Show.”

On the big screen she played a lesbian who murdered her lesbian girlfriend (played by Kathy Griffin) in the Roger Corman slasher pic, “The Unborn.” But it’s her standup that is really fun to experience.
She produced “The Hungry & Horny Show,” which is an original vagina monologue style show about the various hungers of women. She is the creator and host of a monthly live spoken word show in Santa Monica called “Tasty Words.” Her book, “Tous Mesregimes.com,” was published by Marabout Press. Wendy also coaches writers and performers.
