In what has become a Reno/Tahoe tradition, the 17th annual Tour de Nez bicycle race & festival presented by Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort will return to the Reno/Tahoe region from Wednesday, June 17 through Sunday, June 21. In addition to pro racing for both men and women, the festival will also host a hand cycling Omnium, and the national Hand Cycling Criterium Championship presented by IGT on the second stage of the race, in downtown Reno on Friday, June 19.
PRO’S TAKE CENTER STAGE
For the pros, a three day Omnium will be contested, with riders earning points for each day that go toward an overall prize. Because time is not kept as it is in a stage race, each hopeful overall contender will need to finish among the top in each stage if they are to contend for the overall.
ABOUT THE PROS
The Tour de Nez presented by Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort has always been a favorite of the pros. The race is well-known for its fun and festive atmosphere. This year, the Tour de Nez offers three days of professional racing beginning on June 18 in Truckee, followed by the famous downtown Reno Criterium on June 19 and ending at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort on June 20. Riders and teams such as Ouch presented by Maxis, BMC, Bissell, Team Type One, and Kelly Benefits will be competing for over $35,000 in prize money.
ABOUT THE MASTERS
The Tour de Nez Master Criterium is a huge part of the five day festival. Expanding upon last year’s single criterium, the Tour de Nez has added two extra days of racing to the June 20 race at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort. This year’s Masters Criterium includes the downtown historic Truckee race on June 18 and the fast paced and popular downtown Reno on June 19. Riders such as former world masters champ Larry Nolan and former National masters champion Bubba Melcher will be battling it out for Tour de Nez bragging rights.
ABOUT THE WOMEN’S
2008 was the first year that The Tour de Nez incorporated women’s racing into the professional event, and due to the overwhelming success of the women’s pro criterium The Tour de Nez has expanded the category to include three races in Truckee, Reno and at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort. Teams such as Tibco, Vanderkitten, Velo Girls, and Sugar Cream have already committed to the race in the mighty, mighty Tour de Nez.
ABOUT THE HAND CYCLES
2009 is a big year for hand cycling and the Tour de Nez. The 17 year event was recently awarded the National Hand Cycling Criterium Championships taking place in downtown Reno on June 19. In addition, the Tour de Nez will host an omnium style race for hand cycling participants during the additional stages of The Tour de Nez.
TOUR DE NEZ OFFERS MORE THAN RACING
For the fans, there will be an expo area featuring gear, as well as the always entertaining "Clunker Classic" and Kids Races. The "Clunker Classic" will feature participants riding bikes weighing 25 pounds or more.
All styles of bikes are welcome, and nothing will be left to the imagination as each bike will also be judged for originality. A "Most Original Clunker" award will be given out each day, with the winner taking home two Tour de Nez water bottles, as well as a 2009 Tour de Nez t-shirt, jersey, and hat.
Other fan competitions include "Best Cycling Inspired Outfit" and "Best Hand Made Sign," with Chrome messenger bags and other exciting gear up for grabs on June 18, 19, and 20.
Finally, each day of racing will feature a crowd prime, or a cash prize donated by the attending crowd for the first rider across the line on a given lap of a race. The crowd prime gives the audience a chance to own a piece of the race, and the top cash donator for each prime will be invited up on stage to view the end of the race action.
As it does each year, the Tour de Nez will also feature block parties at the end of each day of racing featuring live music, food and drinks. The party kicks off with the “Welcome Back to Reno” party at Amendment 21 featuring live music, drink specials and dancing, commencing with a Tour de Nez style trip to the Ace’s Baseball Stadium to enjoy a ball game. All are invited to attend, as the festival continues into each night.

Hand cycling national championships added to Tour de Nez schedule
The 17th annual Mighty Mighty Tour de Nez bicycle classic welcomes the return of the hand-cycling Omnium to the week’s schedule for 2009, and the event has also been chosen to host the prestigious Hand Cycling National Criterium Championship presented by IGT on June 19, 2009 in Downtown Reno.
A field of up to 50 participants are expected to battle it out on the streets of downtown Reno for the Stars & Stripes National Champion’s jersey. National Championships will be awarded in both the men’s and women’s categories.
In addition to the hunt for the national title, the hand cyclists will also contest a three-day Omnium of their own, with criterium races in downtown Truckee on Thursday, June 18 and through the Village-at-Northstar Resort on Saturday, June 20.
Point breakdown for each day of Omnium will be weighted, with Thursday’s downtown Truckee criterium counting for 25% of the Omnium points, Saturday’s Village at Northstar race 25%, and Friday’s National Championship 50%.
“The Tour de Nez, a celebration of the bicycle and bike culture, is extremely excited to have the National Hand Cycling Criterium Championship for 2009,” event promoter Tim Healion said, “Hand cycling embodies the spirit of the Tour de Nez, and we are delighted to be hosting the National Championships. We look forward as well to the three day Omnium competition as well, as we welcome hand cycling back into the fold for 2009.”
The City of Reno too has been extremely supportive of the event, as Mayor Bob Cashell expressed upon learning that Reno had been chosen the host of the 2009 Championship:
“The entire city was very excited in having the hand cycling event in 2005 and 2006, and having the National Championships this year will make things even more exciting. The City of Reno looks forward to putting on a show with some of the best hand cyclists in the world in the Biggest Little City in the World.”
In addition to the Hand Cycling National Criterium Championship and Omnium, the Tour de Nez will feature a full line up of of road cycling as well. America’s top professional men and women riders will descend on the Reno/Tahoe area for the three-day Omnium, where they will race for prize monies exceeding $35,000.
The Mighty Mighty Tour de Nez begins on Wednesday, June 17 and runs through Sunday, June 21. For more information, please visit www.tourdenez.org.
