TW: Can you describe what a "natal chart" is?
Kari: Science now recognizes that every eco system in the universe is fundamentally intertwined. The ancient Taoists viewed the microcosm as a snapshot of the greater whole, just as the moving planets taught us when to plant and harvest. Eastern philosophers observe how a tiny seed holds the blueprint of everything it will become and yet it is cultivated by the changing seasons. Human beings are no different and are part of life’s greater tapestry. The natal chart is a picture of the macrocosm at the moment of birth and becomes a mandala, or a way of understanding one’s connection to what unfolds.
TW: And how is it different or similar to the zodiac sign associated with your month of birth?
Kari: The New Astrology combines the Eastern zodiac character with the western version, giving one the opportunity to gain additional insight into one’s personality, strengths, and weaknesses. Additionally, the natal chart is drawn from a language of symbols that tell a story that is much more complex than a simple sun sign interpretation. It can describe your family, early life and even the unique situations that you face.
TW: How can the life path and personalities of twins be so different then?
Kari: A chart doesn’t describe an exact situation, it only explains the archetypal energy and the flavor of the experience. Life is a place of choices.
TW: How would you describe the Taoist tradition?
Kari: Unlike the ideas of the West that describe natural processes in human terms, in ancient China, nature was the teacher. They observed natural processes to understand the human condition. Instead of describing life as something static, they appreciated the transient or ever changing aspect of life. Something that is continually evolving cannot be said to have been created. To return to simplicity is to recognize how we are natural creatures in a natural world.
TW: Why do you adhere to astrology?
Kari: When people ask me my religion, I say ‘coexist.’ I don’t adhere to anything, but if something works to help others find meaning in life, I am interested in it.
TW: How would you describe living life intuitively?
Kari: When one understands the promptings from their inner world, they discover how dreams and inspiration awaken us from a stagnant way of interacting with the world. We may be drawn together into groups because of the ways in which we are alike, but our real nature is defined in the ways that we are different. Living intuitively means that we find this inner direction and allow experience to cultivate it.
TW: Do some people find out frightening things about their life paths in these workshops?
