Have you ever witnessed tele skiers ripping turns in the famed Key Hole or Buttress runs at Alpine Meadows? This is your chance to see it, or better yet to join in the competition.

On Saturday, check out free Karhu demos organized by Alpenglow Sports. The Alpine Meadows’ Telemark Freeskiing Championships return to Tahoe with competition kicking off Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, with the qualifiers in Key Hole, followed by the finals in the Buttress Saturday.

Professional telemark skier Mark Sanders will be deejaying the event both days.
Mandatory pre-registration is Thursday, Feb. 26 from 9-11 a.m. and from 3-5 p.m. in the Main Lodge or online in advance at www.toughguyproductions.com. Mandatory competitor meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. Competitors will be offered discounted $55 lift tickets to warm up for the championships Thursday, Feb. 26.

Entry fee is $200, which includes a two-day lift ticket, $130 for Alpine full season passholders. Contact Lizet at lizetc@gmail.com for an early registration form. Cash only registration on the day of the event.

Pre-registration offers a guaranteed spot in the qualifiers and only 100 competitors will be accepted to compete.

Friday the action starts with bib pick-up between 9-10 a.m. and qualifying runs (juniors, women, then men) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. An after-party will be held in the Mezzanine bar.

On Saturday, watch the finals from 10 am. to 3 p.m. and enjoy the after-party, awards ceremony and gear giveaway at 5 p.m. in the Mezzanine bar.

Lizet Christiansen, owner of Gear and Grind Cafe, competitive telemark freeskier and one of the lead organizers of the Alpine Meadows Telemark Freeskiing Championships had a few minutes to chat with the Tahoe World over the weekend about this sweet event, check it out:

TW: So, Lizet, what are you looking forward to most with the Alpine Meadows Tele Freesking Championship?

Lizet: I’m really excited that it’s back here again, there’s no tele comp like this anywhere in California, and it’s such a big tele state and there’s such good snow that it’s good to get one back here. And with the event, I’m excited that it’s starting to turn into a real series. That’s good for competitors to track their points.

TW: This competition is open to anyone — amateur or pro — right?

Lizet: Yes it is. We’ll have one division for men over 18 years old, one division for women over 18 and then there’s a juniors division for girls and boys between 12 and 17 years old.

TW: Cool. What kind of prizes are available?

Lizet: There’ll be good cash prizes for first, second and third in both the men’s and women’s divisions and great gear prizes for the junior divisions. Our sponsors include Columbia, CW-X, Patagonia, FlyLow, Ortivox, Mountain Hardware, Garmont, Backcountry Access, Marmot, Kuhl, DaKine, G3, Rossignol, Clif Bar, Twenty Two Designs, Freestyle Watches, Moment Skis, New Belgium, and Alpine Meadows.

TW: How many competitors are you expecting to sign up?

Lizet: We’ve had a lot of inquiries, but most of our competitors will likely sign up on the day of the event, so it’s hard to tell exact numbers.

TW: How can you describe the lines that competitors will be skiing?

Lizet: Everybody’s line is going to be different. You can make your line as easy or as difficult as you want. Skiers will be judged in five areas: Line, Control, Fluidity, Agression, and Technique. You have to balance your line with what you know you can ski well. You have options to make jumps and you have some nooks and crannies you can squeeze yourself through to show your technical skill. There will be plenty of opportunity to show good telemark form.

TW: Do you have any advice for first-time competitors?

Lizet: Ski something that you can ski confidentally. You’re definitely better off skiing a clean line than skiing something too difficult and falling.
