The Winter Dew Tour was established in 2008 as the world’s premier season-long winter action sports tour. The 2008-09 Winter Dew Tour consists of on-slope competition as well as music concerts and various other lifestyle elements. Head over to Northstar-at-Tahoe Feb. 19 through Feb. 22 to see the world’s top snowboard and freeski athletes compete in superpipe and slopestyle events for the Dew Cup and a share of the $1.5 million prize purse.
Where Can I Find Tickets?
Spectators without a lift pass should purchase a Gondola Ticket at $15 per person per day to view the event.
$20 Fast Passes provide access to exclusive lift lines during the Dew Tour. Details online at: www.northstarattahoe.com
What Are The Competitions All About?
Slopestyle
In slopestyle, riders perform tricks while descending a predetermined course, moving around, over, across and down different features. Judges determine a winner based on the execution of each trick performed and the difficulty of it.
Superpipe
Designated a “superpipe” because the walls are 18 feet tall, competitors ride from wall to wall, performing tricks above the sides of the pipe.
Who Will Be Competing?
Whom to Watch... Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe
Shaun White • Carlsbad, Calif. • 9.3.86
Snowboarding since he was four years old, Shaun White burst onto the snowboarding scene in 2002, claiming a silver medal at Winter X Games. An X Games medalist every year since, White has seven gold medals to his credit -- tied with Tanner Hall for the most ever on the winter scene.
Mason Aguirre • Duluth, Minn. • 11.10.87
A pro since the age of 15, Aguirre became the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic Snowboarding team, beating out 2002 halfpipe gold medalist Ross Powers and bronze medalist J.J. Thomas for the spot. In Torino, Aguirre finished in fourth place, cementing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the pipe.
Whom to Watch... Women’s Snowboard SuperPipe
Torah Bright • Cooma, Australia • 12.27.86
In the 2006 Winter Olympics, Bright represented Australia in the halfpipe, finishing fifth in the event. That same year, she earned a silver medal at X Games, following it up with a gold medal in 2007. Voted the Best Woman’s Snowboarder in the World in a 2008 EXPN survey, Bright repeated as overall champion of both the World Superpipe Championships and the Burton Global Series -- winning the U.S. Open and Japan Open individual titles en route to the overall victory.
Hannah Teter • Belmont, Vt. • 1.27.87
Teter became the first female snowboarder to land a 900 in competition in 2002, earning a berth on the U.S. snowboarding team a year later. As the youngest member of the squad, she won the gold medal at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. Not only is she a force to be reckoned with in the superpipe -- finishing third at the 2008 European Open -- Teter gives back, donating all her prize money and establishing Hannah’s Gold to raise money for a town in Kenya she adopted.
Whom to Watch... Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle
Andreas Wiig • Asker, Norway • 3.5.81
Wiig truly established himself as a threat on the slopes in 2007, ending Shaun White’s four-year winning streak and taking home his first X Games gold medal.
Travis Rice • Jackson Hole, Wyo. • 9.10.82
Known for the size of his airs and his approach to difficult tricks, Travis Rice excels in all terrains -- superpipe, the back country and especially on the slopes. The 2007 X Games silver medalist in Best Trick, Rice closed out the 2006-07 TTR World Snowboard Tour ranked third overall.
Whom to Watch... Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle
Hana Beaman • Santa Barbara, Calif. • 8.25.82
A three-time Winter X Games silver medalist on the slopestyle course, Beaman was also named the 2006 Transworld Snowboarder of the Year in the riders’ poll. Already this season, Beaman graced the cover of the first Transworld Snowboarding magazine of the season and is featured in the video, La La Land.
Jamie Anderson • South Lake Tahoe, Calif. • 9.13.90
The winner of the Abominable Snow Jam and the Roxy Chicken Jam in 2006, Anderson also claimed a bronze medal at the Winter X Games the same year, becoming the youngest Winter X Games medalist in the process. Currently a back-to-back X Games slopestyle champion, Anderson used wins at the Australian Open, the Burton New Zealand Open, and the Roxy Chicken Jam to claim the title of 2008 TTR World Champion.
Whom to Watch... Men’s Ski Superpipe
Tanner Hall • Kalispell, Mont. • 10.26.83
With seven Winter X Games gold medals to his credit -- including three consecutive superpipe titles -- Tanner Hall is tied with Shaun White for the most in the history of Winter X. This year, his work on Believe won him Powder Awards for Best Film, Best Segment and Best Line.
Simon Dumont • Bethel, Maine • 7.9.86
With five Winter X Games medals to his credit -- including a silver medal at the 2008 Games -- he also holds the world quarterpipe height record with a 35.5-foot air out of a 38-foot pipe.
Whom to Watch... Women’s Ski Superpipe
Sarah Burke • Midland, Ontario • 9.3.82
The winner of the 2005 FIS World Championships in superpipe, Burke also claimed top honors at the U.S Open as well as a silver medal at Winter X Games. After taking home her second Winter X silver medal in 2006, Burke captured her first gold medal in 2007. The first woman to land a 720, 900 and 1080 in competition, Burke was voted one of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in 2006.
Whom to Watch... Men’s Ski Slopestyle
Charles Gagnier • Victoriaville, Quebec • 7.19.85
The inventor of the octograb, a trick where he grabs one ski’s tail with his right hand and the nose of the other ski with his left, Charles Gagnier began his career racing. The winner of the 2005 U.S. Open, Gagnier thwarted Tanner Hall’s chance to four-peat at the X Games that year as well, taking home his first gold medal.
Jossi Wells • Wanaka, New Zealand • 5.18.90
With a silver medal at the 2008 Winter X Games in the halfpipe, Wells also had a second-place showing at the U.S. Open Big Air contest. His noteable slopestyle performances include third-place showings at both the Orage European Open and the New Zealand Freeski Open in 2007.
Whom to Watch... Women’s Ski Slopestyle
Kristi Leskinen • Hopwood, Pa. • 2.10.81
With a Winter X Games bronze medal to her credit (2005), Leskinen took third place at the U.S. Open slopestyle contest in 2007, besting the performance with a secondplace showing at the Japan Open the same year. This year, Leskinen was the first skier to be featured on Fuel TV’s Firsthand, taking third place at the European Open and second place at the North American Open.
And What's Up With Common?
The Winter Dew Tour will also host hip hop star and two-time Grammy winner Common will headline the Verizon Wireless music stage on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Toyota Championship, the third and final stop of the Winter Dew Tour at Northstar-at-Tahoe.
Common burst onto the hip-hop scene in 1992 with his debut album “Can I Borrow a Dollar” and hasn’t looked back. In 2006 his hit record “Be”, produced mostly by superstar rapper Kanye West, was nominated for four Grammy Awards and won the coveted honor for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for the hit single “Southside” featuring West. Cannon, who is set to release his highly anticipated album “’09”, also boasts a burgeoning acting career. The Chicago native held significant roles in blockbuster films “Smokin' Aces”, “Street Kings”, “American Gangster”, “Wanted”, and the upcoming “Terminator Salvation”.
“I’m a huge Common fan so I’m pumped to see him perform live,” said Tanner Hall, currently first in the Freeski Superpipe Dew Cup points standings. “Common is the perfect performance to end the successful inaugural season of the Winter Dew Tour.”
Progressive/Psych-Rock band Tweak Bird features a tandem of brothers, guitarist Caleb and drummer Ashton Bird. Tweak Bird’s debut EP “Reservations”, released in September ’08, is filled with instrumental-style jamming and the high-energy sound the Los Angeles based Bird brothers have become known for.
All music from the Verizon Wireless music stage is free to the general public including the Friday night concert with Common and Tweak Bird.
