Welcome winter!
It's been a long wait, but recent storms have brought ample snowfall to the Tahoe region this past week, and the powder hounds are loving it.
The fresh snow has got all Tahoe-area ski resorts reexamining their plans, with most resorts now open for limited operations, and all the rest getting ready to go full blast soon enough.
That means it's the perfect time to plan your holiday vacation plans in Tahoe.
Check out our guide to Lake Tahoe's alpine ski resorts and the many options for cross country skiing the area affords too. And don't feel like you have to pay full price for those lift tickets as there are plenty of deals out there to be had.
Of course there's a lot more to do in Tahoe than ski and snowboard. Keep reading for lots of other great ideas.
Northstar Snowshoe series provides alternative to winter running
Northstar-at-Tahoe resort offers snowshoe race series and clinics to help runners break away from the winter monotony of training on a treadmill.
"It's a totally fun change of pace," said Julie Young, the director of Northstar-at-Tahoe Cross Country, Telemark and Snowshoe Center.
She said she hopes the series will take off like those in Colorado, which attract hundreds of snowshoers each winter -- from elite runners to families out for recreation.

And if racing isn't your cup of tea, you can still get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the Tahoe region on snowshoes at your own pace.

Fall photo contest winner announced
From the first snowfall on the mountain tops of the Sierra, to abstract leaves and colorful sunset shots, the Tahoe World and Tahoe.com staff was blown away by the beautiful photos submitted in the Tahoe World’s annual Fall Photo Contest. A big thank you to all who participated.
We had almost 400 photos initially submitted by residents and visitors to the Tahoe area, and after our staff narrowed down the selection to what we thought were the "top 24" photos, we left the decision in the hands of the community to vote for the overall winner.
