Q&A with Standard Films:
Tahoe World Photographer Seth Lightcap caught up with Standard Film’s director Mike Hatchett and Producer Waide Hoyt to get the 4-1-1 on “Aesthetica” and the world premiere party Sept. 3 at Squaw Valley USA:
Tahoe World: How did the title “Aesthetica” come about?
Waide Hoyt: Our director Travis Robb thought of it and the athletes really liked it. “Aesthetica” alludes to the beauty of the elements that create and surround snowboarding — great weather, powder, cool tricks. The feel and the essence of snowboarding is ‘Aesthetica’.
Tahoe World: How does 'Aesthetica' compare to previous Standard productions?
Mike Hatchett: We tried to keep it real simple this year, not a lot of crazy graphics or computer tricks. It’s a true old school film edit, gritty and fast paced with most shots produced in-camera.
Tahoe World: What are the banger segments we should look forward to?
Hoyt: One part that’s super cool in the movie is a feature with legendary Johan Olafsson on ‘Noboarding’, bindingless snowboarding. This year we have a girl in our film as well, Priscilla Levac. She’s the first female we’ve worked with since 1999. We also have some crazy avalanche footage from Xavier Delarue, and of course, hard hitting segments by our classic lineup — Mads Jonsson, Mark Landvik, Eric Jackson, and a solid freestyle breakout section from Torstien Horgmo.
TW: Any particularly sweet Tahoe film segments in ‘Aesthetica’?
Hatchett: The movie opens up with some shots from Squaw Valley, which is cool because of the world premiere being held there. Other great Tahoe shots are from one of the last days of filming this season. Jonahs David built this absolutely giant park jump at Alpine Meadows. Chas Guldemond and Torstien Horgmo killed it. Torstien threw a switch back ten. We got great footage.
TW: What do you have instore for us at the premiere party?
Hoyt: We have never done a world premiere in our back yard, in the Tahoe basin. We have always done it at ASR (Action Sports Retailer Convention). This first year on the North Shore it's going to have a real local flavor, but global exposure. Fuel TV will be there producing a television show called the Blue Carpet Special.
It'll be a documentary on the production of the world premiere and the making of 'Aesthetica'. Going on the same night, we have another world premiere in Montreal that Fuel's covering. When they edit the show together its gonna be a double premiere, east coast vs west coast. The after party will go off too. Mike and Dave's band Fortress is playing, the bar will be open all night, it's gonna be a great party.
