Ground yourself on one of these 19 trails in the North Lake Tahoe area. Whether you're looking for a simple stroll or you're ready to huff and puff to new heights, we've got three categories - easy, moderate and strenuous - to help you pick the right path for you.

Easy

Cascade Falls Trail
Distance: 3 miles round-trip
Details: Hwy 89 south 25 miles from Tahoe City, at Emerald Bay turn right at Bayview Campground (across from Inspiration Point). Park at far end of campground. Sturdy footwear recommended, slight ups and downs, great views of Cascade Lade, the 200-foot high falls and the Sierra.

Page Meadows
Distance: 1 mile to meadows, varying trails through five connecting meadows.
Details: Hwy 89 2 miles south of Tahoe City, right on Pineland Dr., 2 miles to Forest Service Road 15N60 or 16N48 on right, continue approximately 1 mile up dirt road. No signed trails in the meadows.

Prey Meadow / Skunk Harbor
Distance: 1/2 mile one-way
Details: Hwy 28 east of Incline Village, look for iron pipe gate on right. Limited parking located at turnouts along the highway. Sights include mixed conifers, filtered lake views, and the remains of the railroad grade that supplied timber to Virginia City in the 1870s. The left fork leads to Prey Meadows, which has a variety of spring/summer wildflowers; right fork leads to Skunk Harbor, a small cove with swimming and sunbathing.

Stateline Lookout
Distance: 1/2 mile one-way
Details: Hwy 28 in Crystal Bay, just east of the Tahoe Biltmore Casino turn north on to Reservoir Dr., turn right on Lakeshore Ave., and left on Forest Service Rd. 1601 by iron pipe gate. Parking lot located just below the lookout. Free telescopes offer great views of the lake. Take a short self-guided nature trail, located at the lookout and learn the history of Lake Tahoe's north shore.

Sugar Pine Point State Park Nature Trails
Distance: varying
Details: Hwy 89 south 9 miles from Tahoe City. Turn left into par. Day use parking fee. Lakeside and forest view paved and dirt trails throughout park. Maps available. Tour historic Ehrman Mansion in summer. Contact: 530-525-7982.

Vikingsholm Castle
Distance: 1 mile one-way down hill
Details: Hwy 89 south 25 miles from Tahoe City to Emerald Bay. Parking and trailhead on left. Tour an authentic Viking castle replica, view Emeral Bay and Fannett Island along the trail and the shore of Emerald Bay State Park. No pets allowed.

Moderate

Ellis Peak Trail
Distance: 2.5 miles one-way
Details: Hwy 89 south 4 miles from Tahoe City to Blackwood Canyon Rd., follow 7 miles to Barker Pass summit. Ellis Peak Trailhead on right where pavement ends. Steep switchbacks ease onto a ridge. Good views of Lake Tahoe as trail passes through open forests and wildflower meadows. Trail intersects dirt road to Ellis Lake in .2 miles. Follow road to right to Ellis Peak (8640'), reach Knee Ridge (8520') in .3 miles. Views include surrounding peaks to the east and Granite Chief Wilderness and Hellhole Reservoir to the west.

High Camp Trails
Distance: 1.5 miles one-way to top, varying distance loops
Details: Squaw Valley's High Camp is a gateway to extensive network of hand-groomed trails that rim Squaw Valley's six peaks. Sights include ancient rock formations, meandering streams, and waterfalls that tumble to the valley floor below. Access to all trails including Shirley Canyon, Western States Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail. Contact: 800-545-4350, 888-766-9331; www.squaw.com.

Five Lakes
Distance: 5 miles one-way
Details: Hwy 89 north 4 miles from Tahoe City, turn on Alpine Meadows Rd. Trailhead about 2 miles on right, parking on shoulder.

Marlette Lake
Distance: 5 miles one-way, or 13 miles to Tunnel Creek
Details: Hwy 28 to Hwy 50 junction. Prk at Spooner Lake Day Use Area, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. Parking fee. Dogs allowed on leash. A moderate 5-mile uphill hike leads through aspen-lined North Canyon to Marlette Lake. This road provides access to the Flume Trail, which starts at Marlette Lake Dam. No fishing allowed at Marlette Lake.

Meeks Bay Trail
Distance: 1.5 miles, or varying distances listed one-way
Details: Hwy 89 south 12 miles fro mTahoe City to the Meeks Bay. Park on right in small dirt lot at trailhead. Wilderness permit required. Moderate hike runs along the northernmost part of the unofficial Tahoe-Yosemite Trail. Follow road for approximately 1.5 miles, pass a small spring, parallel Meeks Creek and continue upward into forested valley. View Alpine lakes before the trail ascends 1,000 feet up a series of switchbacks to Phipps Pass. Trails: 4.5 miles to Genevieve, 5 miles to Craig, 5.7 miles to Hidden, 5.9 to Shadow, 6.3 miles to Stony Ridge, 8 miles to Rubicon.

Pacific Crest Trail
Distance: 5 miles one-way
Details: Hwy 89 south 4 miles from Tahoe City to Blackwood Canyon Rd. Follow 7 miles to Barker summit. PCT trailhead is 0.3 miles beyond end of pavement. Sierra Crest views of Lake Tahoe and surrounding area. Wide variety of wildflowers in spring/summer.

Rubicon Trail
Distance: varying
Details: Hwy 89 south 24 miles from Tahoe City to D.L. Bliss State Park. Day use parking fee. Dipping up and down along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe, the trail offers scenic views of the Lake. Bring a swimsuit, towel and picnic lunch to enjoy a sunny day at one of the many quiet coves along the way. You can follow trail all the way to Emerald Bay, approximately 5 miles one way. No pets allowed.

Shirley Canyon
Distance: 4 miles one-way
Details: Hwy 89 north 5 miles from Tahoe City, left on Squaw Valley Rd., right on Squaw Peak Road, go to end. Limited parking. Hike up along cascading Shirley Creek, great spring/summer wildflowers, ride the cable car back down for free.

Tahoe Rim Trail
Distance: varying
Details: Trailheads include Tahoe City, Brockway Summit, Tahoe Meadows and Spooner Summit. Difficulty of terrain varies. For full details on Tahoe Rim Trail hikes visit www.tahoerimtrail.org, or the Visitor's Center in Tahoe City.

Tahoe Vista
Distance: 1.5 miles one-way
Details: Hwy 267 north from Kings Beach. Parking lot located on left, 1/2 mile from Brockway Summit. Tahoe Rim Trail trailhead located across highway. Follow Tahoe Rim Trail a mile to a junction with a spur trail that leads to a wonderful, nearly treeless vista of Lake Tahoe and neighboring peaks.

Strenuous

Bayview Trail
Distance: varying
Details: Hwy 89 south 25 miles from Tahoe City to Emerald Bay. Turn left at Bayview Campground. Parking located at far end of campground. View Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe along this steep trail that leads up the side of Maggie's Peak and into Desolation Wilderness. Sights include Granite Lake. Corral and watering facilities for horses available at trailhead. Wilderness permit required. Trails: 1 mile to Granite, 4 miles to Azure, 5 miles to Dicks.

Eagle Falls Trail
Distance: varying
Details: Hwy 89 south 25 miles from Tahoe City to Emerald Bay. Eagle Falls Picnic Area and trailhead on right. Parking along highway and in picnic area. View falls from lakeside. Popular and congested area. Wilderness permit required for Eagle Falls Trail, steep terrain leads in the heart of Desolation Wilderness. Eagle Lake is a popular 1.5-mile hike. Trails: 4.5 miles to Dicks and Upper and Middle Velma. 5 miles to Fontanallis.

Mt. Rose
Distance: 6 miles one-way
Details: Hwy 431 north 7 miles from Incline Village. Trailhead and parking area located 1 mile south of summit. Mt. Rose (10,778') is one of highest peaks at Lake Tahoe. Views include the Lake, Reno, Carson Valley and surrounding areas. First 3 miles along dirt road through lodgepole forest with mule ears and sagebrush. Lush meadow at halfway point is filled with lupine, paintbrush and larkspur in spring/summer. Last 2 miles along switchbacks to ridgeline. Don't forget to sign the logbook at the summit.
