There are basically two kinds of people who wakeboard and/or waterski – people who have boats and people who don’t. You know who you are. And we know what you need to know to maximize your time on the water this summer no matter who you are. Find tips on equipment, style, plus where to launch, rent and fill up the tank.

For Boat Owners

From foreign waters - What should you know before coming to Lake Tahoe?
• Find out if you might be coming from a site infested with invasive Zebra or Quagga Mussels. Visit www.100thmeridian.org for a list of known infected areas.
• Remember, once an aquatic invasive species has been introduced into a body of water it can NEVER be eradicated. All it takes is one boat to destroy an entire body of water. 100% compliance is mandatory
• Boat inspections are mandatory at all public launches. Failure to comply is punishable with a $5,000 fine per day of non-compliance
• Mandatory inspections take approximately 15 minutes.
• If your boat is deemed a “hazard” at inspection, don’t worry! There are four portable boat washes at Lake Tahoe that will clean your boat for free so you can still enjoy a day on Lake Tahoe. Call 888-824-6267 (888-TAH-OANS) for more information.
Clean, drain and dry your boat, bilge and bait wells after every day on the water.
• Carbureted two-stroke engines have been banned since 1999; direct fuel injected two-stroke engines are OK to launch
• Tune your boat for high-altitude before you launch at Lake Tahoe so that your boat fuel burns cleaner and more efficiently
• There’s a 600-foot no-wake zone enforced along all Lake Tahoe shoreline. This helps protect wildlife, prevent shoreline erosion and enhances the safety and recreational experience for everyone.
“Mandatory boat inspections are extremely important. Everyone needs to cooperate. This is a sustained effort and something we will have to do forever. If we let one boat slip, we’ll never be able to eradicate these invasive species.” Jeff Cowen, community liaison for Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Where are the best places for morning sessions?
The northeast shore offers calm waters in the morning. Try launching at Sand Harbor State Park, Zephyr Cove or Cave Rock for the smoothest water early in the morning.

Evening sessions?
Tahoe’s West Shore is the place to go for an evening session. Launch at Homewood, Camp Richardson or Tahoe City Marina to enjoy the alpenglow of the sunset session.

Where can I find boat launches?
There are so many launches at Lake Tahoe all it really takes is driving around the Lake to find one that should suit you. But, why not know where you’re going before you start driving? Check out our complete list of launches and marinas on Lake Tahoe and beyond here.

For Ride-A-Longs
So, instead of coughing up thousands to tow your very own boat to and from the launch, you’re committed to a lifetime of one of two scenarios. One: You have friends who have boats and invite you to ride with them; or two: you rent boats. Most of you are probably in the latter category, so let’s start there.

Where can I get the best deal on a boat rental?
From party pontoon boats to wake board specific craft complete with a tower and equipment, there’s a rental scenario for everyone at Lake Tahoe and in the Lake Tahoe area. Check out our complete list of rental facilities with pricing to find the best deal here.

What should I check about the equipment before I go?
Check the ropes to make sure there aren’t any knots that might cause the rope to snap during a tow. Check the board or ski to make sure you’ve got a size that will fit those who are planning to use it. Check also to make sure that all the screws or in the board or ski. Check to make sure there are enough life jackets for everyone on board. And check yourself to make sure you know how to drive the boat and you understand that boats don’t have brakes.

I consider myself rather charming, where are the best places to meet people who do have boats?
Lake Tahoe’s annual Concours d’Elegance, held this year from Aug. 7-9, is a great place to run into Lake Tahoe boat owners. Plus, you’ll get to check out some truly schnazzy wooden boats (not always suitable for pulling skiers or boarders, but still pretty look at and fun to ride in). In South Lake Tahoe, Fresh Ketch, a restaurant and bar, is located right on the water in the Tahoe Keys and is a great après boating destination. On the west side, Sunnyside bar and restaurant is the place to go for après boating and on the north shore, the Lone Eagle Grille, set on the water complete with a dock bar is a good place to mingle with potential boat owners. Need more ideas? Check out our top-10 list of Tahoe’s swankiest bars here.
