Jen Chapin, the jazz singer praised for her “first-rate storytelling” and daughter of the late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, will give two free shows at Moody’s Bistro & Lounge on Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19.

Chapin is known for holding an audience spellbound with her beautiful voice and her ability to weave stories into her songs. She will grace Moody’s stage with a powerful presence that once again reaffirms the restaurant’s commitment to elevate Truckee nightlife to a new level.

Moody’s audiences will be treated to a number of hits from Chapin’s latest album, Ready. An album of anticipation, Ready was largely written while Chapin and her husband/bassist/co-producer Stephan Crump awaited the arrival of their son Maceo.

The album verbally paints a picture of a household preparing for the addition of a new life. The album branches out beyond the life of expecting parents by also depicting a sister waiting for a not-so-little brother to grow up, a citizen waiting to see if her country will vote to stop the bleeding, a would-be lover waiting for her attentions to be returned. Like most stories, the tales Chapin depicts in her songs have both characters and settings that encompass everything from a little tent pitched at the foothills of West Virginia, a rocky beach of a Long Island childhood, a grade school polling site in Youngstown OH, and a moody nightclub.

In the two years since releasing her previous album, Linger, Chapin has toured the East coast, West, South and Midwest and appeared on Late Nite with Conan O’Brien. Linger caught the attention of jazz fans everywhere and earned the praises of National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, People magazine, The Today Show, and Entertainment Weekly. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel lauded Linger as being “smart, observant, lyrically deft, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” while The Boston Globe called it simply: “addictive.”

The Berkshire Eagle described Chapin’s live performance as “an intensely emotional, sensual experience, almost embarrassing in its naked intimacy and vulnerability, in its invitation to listeners to think and to love along with her. She is a remarkable presence on stage...”

Chapin was born to an extended family of artists and academics, and raised along with her four siblings in Long Island, New York. Her work toward earning her BA in International Relations from Brown University was complimented by studies abroad in Mexico and Zimbabwe, and then followed by a new focus in jazz harmony, improvisation and arranging at Berklee College of Music.

As a committed social activist, Chapin has worked hard to interweave her musical and political passions. She chairs the Board of Directors of WHY (World Hunger Year)—an organization co-founded by her father, the late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin—and helps to support WHY’s role as a leading advocate for innovative, community-based solutions to hunger and poverty.
