Few things beat watching the fireworks over Lake Tahoe - or any lake for that matter. Here's a few words to the wise to keep you safe this Fourth of July.

1. Stay clear of the security zone around the barges which will be marked by buoys and police lights on boats

2. Make sure there is a designated driver on board. The legal limit on the water is .10, the same as on the streets.

3. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear lifejackets while on the boat. Also, beware of the cold water temperatures, Lake Tahoe is hovering around 50 degrees.

4. Tell people not on the water with you where you’re expecting to be going and make sure to have a charged cell phone onboard in case of emergency.

5. Remember to bring your driver’s license and current boat registration, enforcement will be in full effect.

6. Slow your speed and make sure your boat’s night lights work before it gets dark.

7. To report emergencies, the US Coast Guard will be monitoring Channel 16.

-Josh Martin, executive petty officer for US Coast Guard
