Aahh – the clink of fine stemware, mod lamps that cast sultry lighting, cocktails with more ingredients than your last shopping list… you don’t have to drive to the city to find the finer things in life – just step outside your door. When you’re looking to hobnob Tahoe-style, dress to impress, grab your wallet and head to one of our top 10 posh bars around the lake:

On the South Side

Opal Ultra Lounge, Inside MontBleu Casino, 55 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Hours: Fri – Sun, 8 p.m. to close

You’ll forget you’re in a small town when you walk into Opal’s feel of big-city sophistication. Dark wood lines a long bar and dramatically draped semi-private booths offer table service where cocktail servers roll liquor carts by to mix your beverage. Friday and Saturday nights bring DJ’s spinning groove lounge music and Sunday evening features disco remixes. Feeling exotic but can’t afford a trip to Istanbul? For $20 (and $10 on Sunday), you can rent a hookah for your table; smoke flavored tobaccos in this Turkish water pipe and whisk yourself to another land.

Most luscious libation: Sample one of the vintage cocktails – when was the last time you had a killer Rob Roy or Sidecar?

Cliché, inside Harrah’s Casino,15 Hwy 50, Stateline, Nev.
Hours: Thurs & Fri: 6 - 9 p.m., Sat: 5:30 - 10 p.m.

Lounging at Cliché is like taking a nightcap in Uncle Alastair’s Manhattan parlor - sophisticated furniture and regal touches grace this highbrow room on the casino’s 16th floor. Walls are lined with wood and glass cases that display a selection of fine cognacs, wines and ports. One wall’s case is a humidor stocked with an impressive cigar selection, and Cliché boasts a unique air ventilation system that whisk offending cigar fumes out of the room.

Most luscious libation: Ask a server to recommend a unique cigar and cocktail pairing.

19 Kitchen-Bar, Inside Harveys Casino, Highway 50 at Stateline Ave., South Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Hours: 19’s Bar is open 7 days serving a limited menu on Sun and Mon night

Plush couches are tucked into a bank of bay windows lining a whole wall of this 19th story lounge. Watch the lake and the town lights sparkle as you sample from 19’s huge liquor selection or from their list of 19 specialty martinis. Once the sun sets, small flat screen TV’s in each table nook can provide sporting entertainment.

Most luscious libation: The Mafia Kiss Martini – we’d tell you more about it, but then we’d have to kill you.

Chart House, 392 Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Hours: Sun – Fri, 5:30 p.m. to Close, Sat, 5 to 10:30 p.m.

Searching for candlelit romance and bewitching views? Tucked up on Kingsbury Grade, Chart House offers an elegant country club feel and beautiful Tahoe panoramas. Their lounge boasts a pages-long menu of liquors, wines, specialty drinks and light fare.

Most luscious libation: Try a Mango or Blueberry Mojito with fresh fruits and mint.

On the North Side

PlumpJack Café, 1920 Squaw Valley Road, Olympic Valley, Calif.
Hours: Lunch & Bar Menu, 11:30 a.m. -10 p.m. daily

For a true après ski experience, take a nip in PlumpJack Café. Their lovely lounge is decorated with funky-chic furniture and features a menu of creative cocktails like the Absinthe Drip Martini and Maple Julep. PlumpJack also hosts monthly wine classes and outdoor patio dining in the summer.

Most luscious libation: Try the intriguingly refreshing Springtini – it’s made with elderflower liquor and 3 secret ingredients.

Sol y Lago, inside the Boatworks Mall, 760 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, Calif.
Hours: Tapas menu daily from 4:20 p.m. – close

Worldly and urbane combine in Sol y Lago’s unique mix of Latin American flavor and city sophistication. Stunning lake views compliment a large selection of Latin American wines, exotic drinks, sangria and a lengthy margarita list. Visit one of Sol y Lago’s DJ parties to add some classy music spin to your evening.

Most luscious libation: Forget that prosaic Red Bull and Vodka, try a Cola De Mono (monkey’s tail) instead: Stoli Vanil vodka, Kahlua liqueur infused with fresh espresso, hand shaken and garnished with espresso beans. Zowie!

Moody’s Bistro, 10007 Bridge Street, Truckee, Calif.
Hours: 2:30-9:30 p.m. Sun-Thurs, 2:30-10 p.m. Fri & Sat. Music on Wed – Sat evenings

(check website calendar for performance start times)
Nothing feels as cosmopolitan as a dark, sultry jazz bar. Get your saxophone fix at Moody’s, where you’re surrounded by red walls, candlelight and fellow music lovers. Moody’s dedication to unique and fresh foods is apparent in their beverage selection and menus and they welcome an eclectic selection of musicians playing free shows weekly. Especially popular among the 20-30 something crowd is DJ OneTruest who spins reggae and dance hall beats every Wednesday night starting at 9 p.m.

Most luscious libation: Kick summer into gear with a Kiwi Lemon Martini: Skyy Citrus Vodka, freshly squeezed Meyer lemon, a splash of simple syrup and muddled fresh Kiwi.

Bite, 907 Tahoe Blvd., Incline Village, Nev.
Hours: 4:30 to midnight Wed - Mon, closed Tuesdays

Incline Village welcomes this new and stylish entry into its entertainment scene. Bite is decorated with simple sophistication and features DJ evenings and a wide selection of American Tapas (try the mini Beef Wellingtons). Their wine list hits enough pricepoints to satisfy everyone, and they boast an innovative menu of modern cocktails based on vintage recipes. Gentlemen take note – on a recent early Saturday evening visit, the ratio of women to men in Bite’s bar was about 10 to 1… difficult odds to beat in Tahoe!

Most luscious libation: The cool Lime-Basil Gimlet is a warm evening must.

Lone Eagle, Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, 111 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nev.
Hours: Mon - Thurs: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fri - Sat: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sun: 5 to 11 p.m.

A North Shore standby, the lounge at the Lone Eagle is always an elegant respite from the rigors of mountain life. Cozy fires in the winter, congenial outdoor fire pits in the summer and year-round lake views through floor to cathedral ceiling windows make the Lone Eagle a continually popular spot. Rub elbows with Incline’s real estate elite at the bar or meet one of the many tourists conferencing at the Hyatt. The Lone Eagle offers a nice lounge menu of wines, cocktails and appetizers and features live music.

Most luscious libation: In the summer months, take a stroll down the pier and order a Pomegranate Lemonade from the pier bar.

Big Water Grille, 341 Ski Way, Incline Village, Nev.
Hours: Bar opens at 4:30 p.m., 7 days/week

The bar at Big Water Grille is another all-season spot for a tasteful happy hour experience. Sit on the deck in the summer for hillside lake views, or around the fireplace when the snow falls. Big Water offers a wide liquor and wine selection and a tempting seasonal bar menu. This spot shakes up some of the best martinis on the lake, so sip away as you watch the sun go down.

Most luscious libation: Order the Roasted Medjool Date & Goat Cheese Tart appetizer off of the dinner menu and ask for a wine pairing. Heaven!
