The 19th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show takes off at Tahoe Valley Airport (TVL) in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Saturday, June 28. Featuring one of the world’s youngest female stunt performers, an F/A-18 Super Hornet demonstration, an MV-22 Osprey aircraft display and leading national aerobatic performances this is one show aviation fans will not want to miss.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the South Lake Tahoe Airport will be the venue for many of the world’s top aircraft and aerobatics performers. The show will include a Chinook helicopter water drop demo, Blackhawk Helicopter, F-18 Hornet, and a 12-plane War Bird Team formation highlighting the opening ceremonies.
The featured performer for this year’s Air Show is Melissa Andrzejewski, 24, piloting a Zivko EDGE 540. She was the youngest female on the 2006-2007 U.S. Unlimited Aerobatics Team, and a four-time winner of the Pitts Trophy, awarded by the British Aerobatics Association. She has also medaled at various national and regional competitions. Melissa will be available to sign autographs.
“I’m honored to have been chosen to fly over Tahoe for this year’s air show,” said Andrzejewski. “I’ve planned some of my finest aerobatic stunts for Tahoe viewers.”
Star performances can also be expected from 25-year stunt veteran and former U.S. Air Force pilot, Bill Cornick, along with Spencer Suderman, known to mesmerize audiences in his Pitts S-2B Biplane with his signature corkscrew smoke trail and inverted flat spin.
New presentations this year include precision free fall skydive teams: Groovalicious based at SkyDance SkyDiving near Sacramento, and Skydive Tahoe; a wildfire suppression Hilo water drop, and back by popular demand is the NAS Fallon (Top Gun) Search and Rescue aircraft with a rescue mission demonstration.
Show attendees can also sit in the cockpit of various vintage aircrafts on display such as the U.S. Marine Corps’ V-22 Osprey and AV-8 Harrier “Jump-Jet”, the Navy’s F-18 Hornet Strike/Attack Fighter and service aircraft from all branches.
“Each year this show continues to grow, adding new attractions,” said Rick Jenkins, director of the South Lake Tahoe Airport. “We’re looking forward to showcasing one of the world’s youngest female stunt performers, as she performs some of her most challenging stunts.”
The Air Show runs Saturday, June 28 from 10:15 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available throughout the day, along with airplane rides, a motorcycle display, Navy Dive Tank Demo and a dunk tank. Admission is just $2 (children under 12 are free), and parking at the South Lake Tahoe Airport is $10, which includes the price of admission.
Gates open to the public at 8 a.m. with pre-show events including a Kiwanis pancake breakfast from 8 – 11 a.m. and a 5K Race/Kids Fun Run at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m chili starts bubbling with the Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club Chili Cook-off.
Opening Air Show Ceremonies soar overhead at 10:15 a.m. with a one-of-a kind 12 craft War Bird fly-by.
Free bus transportation is provided by Blue Go from the South Y Transit Center where parking is provided at no cost. For more information, call the airport at 530-541-0480, or visit www.lakeintheskyairshow.com.
