The Mission

Starting from the Bridgetender in Tahoe City at 4 a.m., we will document our 51-mile expedition in a written article, photos and a video production to bring attention to the Truckee River and its watershed. The coverage will appear in the Tahoe World’s special coverage of the Reno River Festival on May 7 as well as on Tahoe.com and Reno.com.
Please honor our adventurous spirits and the Truckee River as a recreation resource worth protecting by pledging your support to the Truckee River Watershed Council, an organization dedicated to protecting, enhancing and restoring the Truckee River. Pledge your support!
The Women
Wendy Lautner is the assistant editor of tahoe.com (the expedition sponsor) and a whitewater kayaker for eight years. She is a certified ACA whitewater instructor and has taught kayaking for the past three years on the American and Trinity rivers. She provided the impetus for this crazy expedition – the most river miles she’s paddled in a day is 28 – and is excited for the experience of paddling the Truckee River from Lake Tahoe to Reno in one day.
Tera Muir is an avid whitewater kayaker, an athlete and an all-around good person. Wendy called many people begging them to join her on this crazy undertaking, but when she told Tera about the trip it was Tera who asked to join. Always up for an adventure, an accomplished paddler and extremely safety conscious Tera makes an excellent addition to the team.
Sonia Forgues has lived in the Truckee area for more than a decade and has paddled extensively on the Truckee River – though never 51 miles in one day! She is a massage therapist and is studying to be a nurse. Sonia’s wild and spontaneous personality makes her a natural fit for this expedition. She rarely backs down from a challenge and has an inspiring go-get-em attitude.
