The Improv is part of a unique chain of comedy clubs started more than 40 years ago in New York City by Bud Friedman. Originally at the Reno Hilton, the Improv moved to Harrah’s in the beginning of 2001. Current manager and fill-in emcee, Howie Nave, then moved it to its present home at Harvey’s.
Nave, whose background in comedy and business is a smart mix for the club, focuses on bringing Bay Area comics and big names like Dana Carvey, Lisa Lampanelli and Lewis Black to perform at his 300-seat venue. And don't be surprised if an unannounced talent like, say, Robin Williams just happens to make an impromptu appearance.
Nave told the story of how another comic stopped by and wanted to test new material. The headlining comic put up a fight initially, because his act would be cut short and Nave hadn’t revealed the identity of the comic yet.
“Do you want to follow Robin Williams?” Nave asked. The other comic pulled a 180 and gleefully obliged while Nave somehow managed to keep most of the audience in the room for the mystery comic.
“Everybody went nuts,” he said.
Tahoe Comedy North - good for the soul, not bad for the wallet

Expect a solid line-up of comedians in an intimate venue at this up-and-coming club. TCN brings big city laughs to the North Tahoe town of Crystal Bay, taking over the Crown Room at the Crystal Bay Club.
Founder Wayne Wright, former Southern California booking agent, has a good thing going with a supportive Crystal Bay Club staff on Tahoe's north shore. “It definitely helps to have such a great venue and to have the cooperation of a lot of great people that work there,” he said.
Started only a little more than a year ago, Wright's connections keep a steady stream of comedians and the occasional hypnotist or magician on the books. “Once in a while we’ll do something different,” he said. “I believe laughing is good for the soul. It’s something you can go to and really enjoy.”
