Don't forget the sunscreen, powder lovers!

Oh baby, if you're not here, you must be hating life! The Lake Tahoe Basin picked up more than 40" of new powder during last weekend's storms. But wait, that's not all. What goes perfectly with tons of new snow? A bluebird week! We've got blue skies and mild temps for the next seven days, so there is no finer place to ski on Earth than right here.

Big weekend coming up, with the start of Snowfest, Squaw Valley's annual party that has some to do with skiing and a lot to do with hilarious contests and games, including a wasabi-eating contest and a dog agility course... and the Vans Cup at Northstar, where you can watch some of the best snowboarders in the world compete for $200,000. Spectators can get a free gondola pass at the events office, so if you're not skiing or boarding, there's still no reason to miss the action. For more info on either of those events, check out these stories:

• And don't forget that Spring Break is coming soon, so if you're going to be around, take a look at ten great ideas for spring skiing.

See ya on the slopes!

Winter camping; can you handle it?

by Wendy Lautner, tahoe.com

Far from the carefree campfire cookouts of summer months, camping's darker and more difficult sister -- winter camping -- is a lifetime experience not to be missed. However, while a sleeping bag and pad might be all that's necessary for a night out in, say, July, a night outside in March is one that needs a high level of preparation.

The payoff is a side of Mother Nature few recreationalists ever see. You won't have to fight the crowds, the shine of the stars and the moon above an endless sheet of white snow is an incredible sight and the stillness of the winter woods equals unparalleled clarity for the mind.

This week's Powderhound winner is ...

What some dogs will do for a game of snowball fetch! E. Crane submitted this photo of Sierra playing up on Mt. Rose. He wins this week's Powderhound T-shirt and is now entered into the grand prize drawing for a $100 Petco gift certificate! Congratulations!

Your furry best friend could win a Petco gift certificate! Send us a photo of your snow dog, and look for it the following week at our Powderhound Gallery. Each week, our staff will pick one lucky participant to win a Powderhound Report T-shirt. That winner will have their dog featured in that week's issue of the Powderhound Report, and will automatically be entered into the grand prize drawing for a $100 Petco certificate. Submit your photo here, (don't forget to include your name in the caption!) and we'll notify you if you're a winner! We can't wait to see your Powderhound! Good luck!
