'Winter Blast 2008' continues

It's been an awesome, snowy seven days here in the Sierra Nevada. The sneaky "Winter Blast 2008, Part 2" has dropped between 40 and 100+ inches of feathery fluff since it rolled over the mountains last week and it isn't over yet.

As we speak, the National Weather Service is calling for a Thursday storm they're expecting to drop between 8 and 15 inches of fresh before Friday morning! Time to invoke the "ski-day clause" at the office and head over to Sierra-at-Tahoe Friday, Feb. 1 to hang out with the tahoe.com gang!

We'll be on site filming, photographing and of course handing out free Sierra Summit lip balms and sun block -- pocket the block for Saturday, which is looking like it might be a blinding bluebird!

And don't forget to MARK YOUR CALENDARS for next weekend! Friday, Feb. 8 through Feb. 11, Squaw's hosting the biggest winter event yet -- 48STRAIGHT, a celebration of mountain culture, including ski and snowboard-cross racing and halfpipe competitions, more than a dozen live concerts, street parties, fashion shows, film festivals and environmental expos. Oh yea, and tahoe.com will be there too. With all this fresh powder settling in, there'll be even more reason to party. Be safe and have fun out there!

Skiing with kids is a family adventure

by Wendy Lautner, tahoe.com

Skiing can either be an exciting family adventure or a lesson in chaos management. Check out this week's "Ask the Instructor," our series designed to help you get the most of your days on the slopes. Follow our tips from the pro so you can make the most of family ski day for now and years to come.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe instructor Larry Maurice has 27 years as a ski instructor under his boots. He's a certified Level Three Professional Ski Instructor of America, examiner and clinician. In all of his years teaching, Maurice said one thing has always stayed the same. "I've never found a person who couldn't learn how to ski. It's a simple sport. In fact, we don't even call it a sport. It's an activity. A sport is outcome oriented, but what our outcome is here is that people just have fun -- and they do."

This week's video...
Finding deep tracks at Kirkwood Mountain Resort

So, it's noon on a powder day at Kirkwood. And the burning question is not "Where do we find fresh tracks?" but rather, "How could we ever ski all these fresh lines?" The folks at Kirkwood Mountain Resort have devoted 2,300 acres to this daunting task, including 2,000 vertical feet of some of the Lake's steepest and most varied terrain. tahoe.com spent last weekend roaming Kirkwood and found plenty of goods. Check out this video to get a taste of the great runs to be had.
