Your Martin Luther King holiday guide
Martin Luther King weekend (Jan. 19-21) is a fitting tribute to the life of a remarkable man. For many, it has also become a much-needed break to escape to the Lake Tahoe basin for a few days of post-New Year's winter fun. If you and friends-or-family think skiing and snowboarding are fine, but not the basis of the entire visit, how else can you enjoy Tahoe this holiday?
Dog sledding

The Outsider's guide to snowshoeing in the Lake Tahoe area
For me, this year was all about hiking. My bikes felt neglected, I barely took advantage of our local lakes and river, and I'm not even sure I remember how to SCUBA dive. And now that snow has fallen, I want to keep hiking, but without all the fun of postholing. Enter, the snowshoe.
I decided it was time to start learning about what tennis rackets to tie to my feet, and where to go stumbling around with them. So after surfing the web, talking to local shop employees and generally bothering my more snow-adept coworkers with too many questions, I've started to get an idea on what to look for. I'm not coming to this completely green, however, I've been snowshoeing enough times to know that gear matters.

Want to impress her? Seven sweet Valentine adventures for the creative cupid
Candy and flowers are all well and good, but creativity can capture mind and spirit much more than a boxed candy heart. True love may be found in unusual places. Try these for shock and awe to inspire big love!
On the south side of Tahoe: Sleigh bells ring in romance! Recreate romantic scenes from Dr. Zhivago with a snowy sleigh ride over the meadow and through the woods to dinner at LewMarNell's in the Station House Inn or Echo restaurant in Embassy Suites. Borges Family Sleigh Rides at South Lake Tahoe has cozy two-seater sleighs, pulled by beautiful Belgian draft horses (cousins of the Clydesdale), or make it a double date in a four-seater sleigh. You'll have plenty of warm blankets for snuggling (you bring the Schnapps!) as the sleigh winds its way to a hill top with great views of Lake Tahoe. A couple's sleigh ride and dinner package is $125 per person. The ride takes half an hour with a shuttle back to your car after dinner.
