This year marks the 35th anniversary of Kirkwood Mountain Resort with new exclusive programs and events including an innovative carpool forum, full-service family facility and terrain feature.

To kick off the anniversary season right, SKI Magazine devoted the October 2007 magazine cover to Kirkwood as readers ranked the resort number eight for snow quality among all North American resorts. It marks the first time in over 25 years since a Lake Tahoe resort has been on the cover with such prominent exposure. Kirkwood is the only Tahoe resort that has been ranked in the top 10 for its snow quality 18 out of the 20 years SKI Magazine’s Reader’s Poll has existed.

New events

Tahoe Adventure Film Festival, Dec. 15
To kick off the season, Kirkwood and Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa will host a showing of the best adventure films of the year including special segments dedicated to Kirkwood’s 35 years.

Anniversary Celebration Events, Jan. 5-6, 2008
Special lift and lodging deals for Subaru’s Master the Mountain and 6 Summit Peak Pursuit. Plus a special editor’s cut of the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival.

New programs

Burton Powder Progression Program
Kirkwood and Burton Snowboards have partnered to create a first-of-its-kind powder progression program. The Learn to Ride Pow program is designed for intermediate riders who want to experience deep powder.

Burton Women’s Learn-to-Ride
South Lake Tahoe’s only Burton Learn-to-Ride program caters to women of all levels. Additionally, Kirkwood has the area’s largest women-specific Burton snowboarding gear available – from lower-volume boots to more flexible boards – designed exclusively for a woman’s body.

Junior Expedition Teams
Kirkwood’s Junior Expedition Teams are year-long programs where kids ages five to 17 can learn the fundamentals of big mountain skiing and riding in a positive environment. This season hosts a new competition program, the JETs Series.

Snow Camping
Certified guides teach proper gear selection, efficient ways to pack, pros/cons of snow shelters, cold weather cooking and more.

Backcountry Certification Program
Tahoe’s only backcountry certification program includes avalanche, route finding, hazardous terrain recognition, pacing and travel techniques.

New terrain

Boarder/Skier Cross Course
Kirkwood will turn the Mokelumne trail into a season-long skier/boarder X course for both athlete training and general public use.

New environmental initiatives

Carpool Forum
Guests can conserve energy, save gas money, help reduce traffic, and receive Kirkwood rewards and incentives from big names like O’Neill, Marmot, CLIF Bar and Subaru; plus join an online community of Kirkwood loyalists at http://www.kirkwood.com">www.kirkwood.com.

Green Tag Dollars
Kirkwood will sell Green Tags at the ticket window to help develop new wind power generation facilities in the U.S. Kirkwood has pledged to match the total sales of Green Tag for the ski season.

National Forest Foundation
In partnership with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), Kirkwood Lodging entered into an agreement with the National Forest Foundation, a congressionally chartered nonprofit partner of the U.S Forest Service, that every lodging rental unit includes an extra $1 fee to be used for funding local projects within the El Dorado National Forest.

New for families

Timber Creek Family Center
Rated by USA Today as a top beginner area, The Timber Creek Family Center is Kirkwood’s family headquarters with ski and ride schools, rental center, ticket windows, restaurant and a sports shop.

Expedition Lodge Groundbreaking
South Lake Tahoe’s only slope side luxury private residence club breaks ground October 2007, with completion scheduled for December 2009. Located in the Mountain Village near five lifts, it will host a high adventure outfitters store with gear, apparel and programs for the backcountry.
