Slow to a crawl: Hitting the pubs in Kings Beach
By Alex Close, Tahoe World |

The Tahoe World Action Team sacrificed a Thursday evening — and consequently most of Friday morning — to research the bar stools of Kings Beach. We started at the west end and moved east to the far side of the grid before meandering our way back into the heart of town.
Lanza’s
A perfect place to start off the evening. Lanza’s bar area is separated from the general restaurant, leaving those more animated customers at a safe distance from folks trying to enjoy a peaceful dinner. And with 50 cents off beer and wine and free slices of pizza, the happy hour is tough to beat.
Steamers
Steamers is famous for not staying open too late, so hit it up early if you want a beer and some of the best pizza on the North Shore. The bar area is big enough to host a party, and if you want to lose a date, try the First Date pizza with clams and fresh garlic.
Jason’s
Must tries at Jason’s include their monstrous salad bar and their ribs. But if you’re just crawling pubs, the full bar and specialty drinks are great too. If you’re looking for some desert to keep you going, try out the Huckleberry Fin, a twist on the Mudslide with huckleberries. Basically it’s an alcoholic milkshake. Jason’s also has a dynamite deck and outdoor bar in the summer months that usually features weekly live music.
Caliente
Tom Turner’s (of the Garwood variety) new venture, Caliente is a Tex-Mex infused version of Turner’s other spots. The entire roof is a deck with a bar that’s decorated to look tropical and provides a peek of the lake through the trees. The bar area is stylish and clean. Caliente has a HUGE selection of blanco, reposado and anejo tequilas, and a high-octane twist on the classic Gar Woods Wet Woody known as the Chupacabra.
Tradewinds
A locals favorite and the only place to end up at the end of the night. It’s dark, it’s small, they’ve got really cheap PBR and there’s a pool table. What more do you need? Although the Tradewinds also hosts live music on occasion, you can count on there always being colorful characters saddled up to the bar willing to jump into an engaging conversation.
