Those new to running and walking or for participants that enjoy shorter distances can now register for the Lake Tahoe Marathon’s 5K, 10K or even the event’s popular, non-competitive 20-Mile Power Walk and Jog.

The 12th Annual Re/Max Racing for Life 5K is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30, after the free Optimist Kids Fun Runs, at 10 a.m. and benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Tahoe Angora Fire Fund. The course starts and finishes at Pope Beach in South Lake Tahoe, California and heads past the historic mansions of the Valhalla Estates. Registration is $50 per participant.

The Tahoe 10K is Saturday, Sept. 29 and is the last 6.2 miles of the Lake Tahoe Marathon course. The run starts at the top of Emerald Bay on the West Shore, with views of Lake Tahoe and Cascade Lake, and is 99 percent downhill. The last three miles is on the paved bike trail through changing aspen trees and over Taylor Creek with its fire cracker-red spawning Kokanee Salmon. Start time is approximately 9 a.m. Registration is $65 per participant and $70 on race day.

The Tahoe 20-Mile Power Walk and Jog is also slated for Saturday, Sept. 29, but starts earlier at 8 a.m. in Homewood on the West Shore, approximately six miles south of Tahoe City, California. This event, perfect for serious power walkers and those runners training for a marathon, has a seven-hour time limit.

Runners and walkers have a host of events to choose from during the Lake Tahoe Marathon Race Week (Sept. 25-30), including the Marathon, coined “a Saturday morning run you’ll never forget,” that winds down the West Shore from Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe for a post-run bash; Tahoe Triple (three marathons in three consecutive days); 72-Mile Ultra Run; 3-Day Triathlon; Marathon Relays; Half Marathon; 35 or 72-Mile Bike Races; Kayaking and Paddling events; free Kids Fun Runs and Speed Golf.

For more information or to register (fees vary for events), call 530-544-7095 or visit the Lake Tahoe Marathon website at http://www.laketahoemarathon.com">www.laketahoemarathon.com. The website is also home to a course map and profile, event descriptions and 2006 race results.
