The 18th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show comes to Tahoe Aug. 25
Tahoe.com
The 18th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show takes off into the wild blue yonder above the South Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL) Saturday, Aug. 25 with the world’s only air worthy Sikorsky biplane remaining in the world. Hosted at the South Lake Tahoe Airport, the annual event draws private and military pilots along with their aircraft from across the west.
A unique location, the South Lake Tahoe Airport provides a unique Air Show experience with the chance to be close to many of the world’s top aircraft and, not to mention, all at a very reasonable price. This year’s Air Show will include the Marine Harrier Jump Jet, Blackhawk Helicopter, F-18 Hornet, top stunt pilots, and featuring a 12 plane War Bird Team formation highlighting the opening ceremonies. Also showcased will be a mock fire suppressant water drop with the Chinook Helicopter, the only sky worthy Sikorsky biplane remaining in the world and the chance to sit in the cockpits of many of the aircrafts on display. A civilian rescue demonstration with the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Cal Star Helicopter team will also be performed, and helicopter rides will be available for those who just have to fly.
“This is the biggest show we’ve had,” said Rick Jenkins, director of the South Lake Tahoe Airport.
Gates open to the public at 8 a.m. Pre-show events include a Kiwanis pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. and a 5K Race/Kids Fun Run at 9 a.m. Opening Air Show Ceremonies roar overhead at 10:15 a.m. with a one-of-a kind 12 War Bird fly-by. The Air Show runs from 10:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Food and beverages will be available throughout the day. Admission is only $2 (children under 12 are free.) and parking at the South Lake Tahoe Airport is $10 (which includes admission). Free bus transportation is provided by Blue Go from the South Y Transit Center where parking is provided at no cost. For more information, call 530-541-0480 or visit http://www.lakeintheskyairshow.com">www.lakeintheskyairshow.com.
For a sneak peak at the Lake in the Sky Air Show festivities from a distance, pre-show practices are Thursday, Aug. 23 and Friday, Aug. 24 from the South Lake Tahoe Airport. While spectators are not allowed at the airport on practice days, anyone within viewing distance of the airspace above South Lake Tahoe will be able to view the pilots warming up for Saturday’s festivities.
