Eddie Spaghetti will never remove his shades in public, nope, never: straight from the horse’s mouth.
Spaghetti and I had a brief discussion of the superiority of superpowers, I pick invisibility and so does he, but he would also pick flying, since he could never get tired of flying. I tell him he has a nice Gibson, and ask if she has been good to him. “Very good,” he said. And I tell him she looks like she has a lot of miles on her. Indeed she does, and has many more to go.
Lead singer of the self-proclaimed “Greatest rock’n’roll band in the world,” Spaghetti and company rolled into Reno July 11 for a show at Club Underground. They delighted the crowd with hard-rocking tunes with just enough country twang to two-step to, and plenty of balls-to-the-wall rock’n’roll.
Tales of yesteryear
The band came out of Tucson, Ariz., in 1988 with a larger line-up, but relocated to Seattle, Wash., and after some changes, became a four-piece with Eddie Spaghetti on bass and lead vocals, Ron “Rontrose” Heathman and Dan "Thunder" Bolton on guitars and drummer Scott "Scottzilla" Churilla. After some releases on Sub-Pop records, they formed their own label, Mid-Fi recordings.
I first saw The Supersuckers as an opening band for either Bad Religion or Rev. Horton Heat in Minneapolis, Minn., in the 1990s. (Still a little hazy on those years. They all seem to blend together.) I do remember they took the stage with venom, wearing gold boots, gold shirts and cowboy hats and Eddie was playing a gold guitar. They sounded like rock but felt like country and performed synchronized guitar moves that stole the show from the headliners. I fell in love that night with the sound and the image of the Supersuckers.
Seriously one of the best live performances I can remember. They have tried and true old tunes and delicious new rocking ones, and some lucky crowds get to experience the acoustic set of country jams that break your heart, make you smile, and make you crave a shot of whiskey, just like the old Merle Haggard tunes. I especially like “Pretty F@#&’ed Up,” “Paid,” and countless others from the good ole’ days.
Supersuckers have performed with country greats like Willie Nelson and loaned their name and fame to causes including Free the Memphis Three, Farm Aid, and the ’96 Music Festival in Vladivostok, Russia.
If you’ve never seen them, you’d better check them out. They are one of the truly underappreciated bands of our time.
