Site seeing, sporting adventures and gaming are not the only things to do at the lake. Special events are scheduled all year long to keep residents and visitors in the fun of things.

January

The year begins with the spectacular New Year's Eve celebration. Revelers come from all over to party in the streets at Stateline. Others enjoy balls and dances in the clubs and other venues until the wee hours of the New Year. The casino corridor of U.S. Highway 50 closes for the street celebration that draws around 25,000 people who combat winter's midnight chills with sheer numbers of celebrants.

Also in January, the Hot Ice Carving competition brings some of the best ice sculptors to town for one cool show. All through the winter months, the ski resorts host a succession of competitions and special events.

February

In February we wet our whistles at the Valhalla Rhythm and Brew Festival and sample some of the many brews made at local micro-breweries along with some of the best bands from the region. Cupid comes to town on Valentine's Day along with an influx of lovers ready to tie the knot. Then resorts and casinos break out the celebrations for the presidents' birthdays.

March

We are all a little bit Irish, aren't we? Especially in March. The Tahoe-Douglas Rotary hosts its annual St. Patrick's Day Wine Tasting and the influence of leprechauns is witnessed with a variety of corned-beef-and-cabbage/green-beer events and parties. March also brings the Soroptimist's Cruise night.

Ski resorts are in full swing, with Heavenly's annual Bumps & Jumps Challenge Finals, Sierra-at-Tahoe's annual Winterfest celebration, the Northern California Special Olympics Winter Games at Kirkwood Ski Resort, the Kiwanis Sunrisers' Beach Party and Crab Feed and the Annual Fireman's Ball.

Easter, be it March or April, will bring out the bunnies and egg-hunts plus special sunrise services that take advantage of Tahoe's awesome beauty for spiritual inspiration.

April

Lake Tahoe Pioneering in Film Festival grows bigger by the year, as residents and guests attend screenings and glittering receptions all over town for film stars and filmmakers.

The weather tends to be just right for the annual Sierra-at-Tahoe's Boarding for Breast Cancer. The youth-oriented snowboarding and music extravaganza features live performances by some of the biggest names in alternative music. April is also the time for Heavenly Ski Resort's Big Air Series, Euro sled racing and Top Gun on Gunbarrel.

The Tahoe Arts Project is in bloom with its annual Murder Mystery Fundraiser.

May

May both warms and dresses up for the Black and White Mountain Ball at Strawberry Lodge in Strawberry, Calif. The Lake Tahoe Yacht Club presents the Commodore Ball & Dinner Dance. Lake Tahoe Community College hosts its Multicultural Day. On the last day of the month and into June, take part in or watch the Highway 50 Wagon Train as it journeys from Carson City to Coloma.

June

Summertime events attract residents and visitors and one of the most popular is the annual Valhalla Renaissance Festival that features jousting, pageantry, jugglers, food, music, plays, crafts, "goode ale" and a children's glade.

Tahoe also hosts Tahoe Truckin' Fun Run at the Horizon, American's Most Beautiful Bike Ride with its 40-, 72- and 100-mile rides and Harley's at the Horizon to get people on the road. The Tallac Site features the Celtic Festival and its Site Celebration in to kick of the summer-long Valhalla Festival of Arts and Music with daily art exhibits and musical treats.

July

Valhalla Boathouse Theater presents the Classic Film Festival each Wednesday through August as well as a Concert Series on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The South Shore's trademark event is the "Lights on the Lake" Fourth of July extravaganza. Lights on the Lake is the largest pyromusical west of the Mississippi and a reputation for excellence just as big.

Golfers and celebrity-watchers eagerly anticipate the Celebrity Golf Championship at Edgewood Golf Course that attracts dozens of golf pros and celebrities to the lake for the nationally broadcast tournament.

Other July events include the annual finger-lickin' Rib cook-off at Horizon Casino Resort; Wa She Shu It Deh annual Washoe Indian cultural celebration; and Harrah's Lake Tahoe's beer festival.

August

Travel in time to the Roaring '20s for the Great Gatsby Festival held at the elegant Tallac Historic Site. Dress in period clothing and flirt the day away among classic cars, croquet and Charleston lessons.

More outdoor action includes Hot Tahoe Cruisin' parade of cars; the Best of the Mountain Rib Cook-off at Horizon; and Tahoe Airfest at the Lake Tahoe Airport.

September

Labor Day Lake Tahoe features fun for the whole family. The Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race spurs good-natured rivalry between the Hornblower's Tahoe Queen and the M.S. Dixie II paddlewheel boats. Sunday night is a blowout fireworks celebration. The Ole' Fashioned Fishin' Derby covers both weekend days plus concerts and special features can be found all over.

September occasions also include the Artists Home Studio Tour, Cool September Days and the Barton Memorial Hospital black-tie gala fund-raiser.

October

Camp Richardson hosts Oktoberfest each year to celebrate Lake Tahoe's secret golden season. The kokanee salmon run up Taylor Creek to spawn and are the featured guests during the USFS Kokanee Salmon Festival.

Lake Tahoe Marathon participants run from Tahoe City to South Shore. At month's end, Halloween haunts include the Valhalla Grand Hall Haunted House, Terror in Paradise and the outrageous costume party, Freakers' Ball.

November

Civic-minded Epicureans regroup indoors to join Soroptimists International at their annual gala Bet of Tahoe Food & Wine Tasting community fund-raiser. Holiday events commence and include Valhalla Holiday Faire/Victorian Style at the Tallac Site and an array of concerts, crafts sales and parties continue into December.

December

Civic functions slow down a bit as people focus on Christmas and its imperatives such as the Valhalla Holiday Gala and the Barton Hospital Foundation Christmas Party Benefit.

Then there's just enough time to regroup before the New Year's Eve parties start things all over again.
