SUMMIT COUNTY - The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and the U.S. Forest Service will continue collaborative efforts to provide developed recreation opportunities at ski areas nationwide and increase environmental education.

NSAA President Michael Berry, U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey and Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth signed a memorandum of understanding Sept. 18 in Washington, D.C., which outlines work to manage and promote participation in alpine recreation.

The agreement emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships in providing recreational facilities, management of the national forests and maintaining sustainable and viable communities.

The agreement reaffirms and expands on the original agreement signed on Dec. 4, 1994.

"The NSAA and the Forest Service share a mutual commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable slopes," Berry said. "The ski industry is committed to growing the sports of skiing and snowboarding. We strive to create wonderful experiences for our guests to recreate outdoors in scenic alpine environments. Skiing and snowboarding on national Forest Service lands are a great way to improve the health of Americans both mentally and physically."

Each year, nearly 30 million skier-visits are tabulated at more than 130 ski areas located on Forest Service lands. Ski areas operate under special-use permits issued by the Forest Service. Over the years, ski areas have invested billions of dollars in improving ski area facilities for public use.

"By working together with our partners we can continue to ensure that fun, healthful outdoor opportunities are delivered to the public, and to future generations," Bosworth said.
