    Summer may be coming to an end but the joy of the season is still evident in Labor Day weekend celebrations in Lake Tahoe. There are still water activities to be explored, music to be heard and festivals that need attending throughout the weekend of Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. For those visitors and locals looking for one last summer hurrah, here is a list of highly anticipated Labor Day events in Lake Tahoe compiled by Tahoe.com.

    1. Labor Day Fireworks Extravaganza

    Aug. 31

    8:30 p.m.

    This pyrotechnic exhibition explodes over Lake Tahoe after dusk on Aug. 31 at 8:30 p.m. Now sponsored by the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority, the show features a variety of patterns, shapes and designs and simultaneous music broadcast can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL – AM 1490. There is no better way to enjoy Lake Tahoe festivities than with these fireworks, so grab blankets, the family and a spot on Nevada Beach or the Timber Cove Marina for a great view.

    2. The 22nd Annual Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race

    Voted the best Tahoe boat cruise in South Lake Tahoe by readers of The Tahoe Tribune, the 312-passenger Tahoe Queen, is the lake’s only authentic Mississippi paddlewheeler.

    Aug. 30

    11 a.m.

    The 2014 Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler race pits Nevada’s beloved MS Dixie II against California’s Tahoe Queen in a four-mile race along the southeastern shoreline of beautiful Lake Tahoe to determine overall lake supremacy and the chance to win the coveted Tahoe Cup.

    The Tahoe Queen is located 900 Ski Run Blvd. South Lake Tahoe, CA at Ski Run Marina Village. The M.S. Dixie II is located at 760 HWY 50, Zephyr Cove NV at Zephyr Cove Resort. Both vessels will board at 10 a.m. and depart at 10:30 a.m. for a race start near Edgewood at 11a.m. Guests can join the party and excitement aboard either boat for only $25 per person, includes Tahoe’s only Paddlewheel Brunch Buffet.

     

    3. Sample the Sierra

    Aug. 31

    1 p.m.

    The 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Festival gives visitors a chance to relax and break away from the Labor Day chaos. Sample the regions best food and wine and browse vendors homemade jams, honeys, veggies and crafts. The festival paris local farmers with chefs who produce tasting samples that are paired with an appropriate wine or brew. A competitive edge has even been added for attendees to vote for the booth with the “best tasting experience.” There are farm tours, winemaker dinners, art and concerts from some of the hottest acts at Lake Tahoe.

    4. Concerts at Common Beach

    Aug. 31

    3 p.m.

    This 12-week concert series provides music from local, regional and national performers every Sunday afternoon this summer. Families can put together a picnic or purchase local food and drinks from vendors on the beach. On Labor Day weekend, the concert starts early at 3 p.m. with openers Groove Foundry before the main performance by Joy & Madness. Soak up the sun, bury your feet in the sand, sip on an ice cold drink and listen to great music on Common Beach.

    Aug. 30 

    2 p.m.

    This craft brew festival doesn’t only have 50 craft beers, but features live music from popular bluegrass act Hot Buttered Rum and folk-rock band Miner. Attendees get unlimited beer tasting with entry while supporting Disabled Sports USA. The famous “hit the slopes” raffle will feature great prizes including season passes, lift tickets, skis, snowboards and winter gear.
