Shopping Lake Tahoe Villages
Lake Tahoe wouldn’t be the destination resort of choice for so many world wide if it weren’t for the surrounding villages: Truckee, Squaw Valley and Northstar, to name a few. If you’re en route to the Tahoe basin or looking for an afternoon excursion into the mountains, these alpine resort towns are sure to leave you feeling relaxed and well-cared for.
- Historic downtown Truckee is a two-lane street lined with a feast for the eyes. Each window is meticulously decorated to lure you inside: from locally-made candles to the Shangri-La of kitchen boutiques, a local turquoise dealer and an artists’ co-operative, not to mention one of the best book shops around.
- Squaw Valley, just up the highway in one direction, is a mountain resort catering to the highest of tastes, with an enclosed village to match. Shop till you drop, preferably into a comfy Adirondack chair by a fire pit, after finding great deals on ski wear, jewelry, and clothes, clothes, clothes, and maybe a quick nip into the wine shop.
- Between Tahoe and Truckee in the other direction, you’ll find a remote mountain resort at the end of a long, winding wooded jaunt that deposits you smack dab into the Village at Northstar. After you look through a bike shop and some incredible outdoor clothing stores, find your way to the comfortable coffee shop for a reviving espresso, then head back out to look at incredible local photography to take home.
Use the directory to find out about open hours and seasonal specials. Whatever you’re looking for, these alpine villages will leave you well-shopped, well-fed and full of mountain air.
